Presentation: Evaluations of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) in Crisis

The presentation will discuss the following aspects relating to crisis evaluations of individuals with intellectual disabilities:

  1. Common reasons for emergencies
  2. Scope of the problem: how many individuals are utilizing emergency or inpatient care?
  3. How to conduct an assessment when the person is in crisis
  4. How to work effectively with families and paid caregivers during crisis
  5. Issues around admission
  6. Outlining a treatment plan and providing hope

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify signs of mental illness in an individual with intellectual disability in a crisis
  • List ways in which to communicate with an individual with intellectual disability in crisis
  • Outline a person centered and systems-centered care plan

About the Presenter:

Angela Hassiotis is a professor in intellectual disability in the Division of Psychiatry at UCL and honorary consultant Psychiatrist at the Camden Learning Disability Service. One of her main research interests is in the evaluation of interventions in people with intellectual disabilities. Current research projects include a HTA funded multicentre cluster randomised trial of a positive behaviour support in people with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour, for which I am the Chief Investigator. She is also collaborating with colleagues from Glasgow University on a feasibility RCT of statins in dementia in people with Down syndrome, the department of Public Health (UCL) on a pilot RCT of an intervention for obesity, and with colleagues in addictions on a brief intervention for alcohol misuse. She has also completed trials on the evaluation of CBT for depression and anxiety in people with intellectual disabilities.
